Concept art of Mantis People for Limenoia. The Mantis People are the unfortunate victims of an experiment to implant mantis DNA into the human genome. They were once ordinary employees of Aperture Science, until Cave Johnson's new initiative to increase the efficiency of the staff at the Aperture Science complex led to a monstrous catastrophe, as a result of which half of the complex's workers turned into crazed mutants attacking their colleagues. According to the original idea, the implantation of mantis DNA was supposed to increase the immunity and endurance of ordinary personnel, from test subjects in test chambers to secretaries and cleaners. Unfortunately, as is usually the case at Aperture Science, they decided not to test the drug on experimental animals, but to move straight to humans due to the overconfidence of the scientific staff, driven by Cave Johnson's arrogance. Many people were injured in the "Attack of the Mantis Man" incident, but the Mantis Men were pushed back to the lower sections of the complex, cutting off all other exit routes. In order to not risk any more security personnel, management decided to call in FASMA to capture and neutralize the mutants. Thanks to their precise work and the element of surprise, with fewer casualties, FASMA operatives managed to capture the remaining individuals. Cave Johnson wanted to give the order to eliminate the mutants, but his closest scientist and old comrade Dr. Greg managed to persuade him not to kill the mutants, but to leave them for further research in order to cure the victims of the genetic experiment and return them to human form. Cave Johnson agreed, but on the condition that this would be done elsewhere. The last thing he wanted was more hassle with mutants.
