!!9mm Glock Appreciation Thread!!

The pistol in HL1 is often overlooked and, at times, has even been called useless.

The pistol is one of the most useful and versatile weapons in all of Half-life, especially early on. That's not to say it stops being useful once you get the MP5, it's useful all the way to the end of the game.

It's understandable that people might perceive the pistol as being a stop gap measure until you get the MP5 as it's worth only really becomes evident once you're fairly well acquainted with the games AI.

So, what is the pistol good for? Long range, accurate shots with lots of ammo! It's not just long range shots but medium and close too.

A common scenario is seeing a monster/humans arm and torso sticking out around a corner (head visible sometimes too!). With the pistol you can kill the enemy without them reacting at all. The same goes for long distances - headshots do a lot of damage in HL so being able to hyper accurately pump rounds in a grunts head from a distance is hugely beneficial.

But what about the crossbow, 357 and gauss!? They're much better for long range combat! Well, that's true in some cases but not all. Crossbow isn't a hitscan weapon which makes multiple accurate shots (e.g headshots on charging grunts) very hard to do (depending on the map/encounter). Gauss and .357 are great but they come often come much later and with much, much less ammo.

The pistol isn't just good for long and medium range, it's also great for close range (depending on the enemy). It's extremely useful against headcrabs, zombies, alien slaves and, to a lesser degree, bullsquids. It takes 3 headshots to bring down an islave which is often easily doable in close range. The shotgun is better if fighting solely at close range but the pistol allows you to take out the close range target and then switch to long range without having to swap weapons.

I've hit the word limit so yeah, the glock rules. What do y'all reckon?

If you're looking to play a lot of HL, OpFor or even HL2 maps/mods then you could look into doing what I'm doing currently at RTSL - going through their entire HL1 map and mod archive in chronological order and leaving reviews for each release.

It really helps to give some structure and process for ticking off completed mods. I'll assume everyone knows about RTSL here - https://www.runthinkshootlive.com/hl/. When browsing HL1 mods you can use their awesome filtering and sorting options to easily sort from oldest to newest and then to see which ones you have and haven't reviewed.

I've found this a great method for injecting more HL into my play schedule and highly recommend it (esp if you have ADHD like me)!

I've seen people talking about jb mod in this thread - community.lambdageneration.com/h… - and thought I should share this video to shed some light on the mod and the very common misconceptions about it. It's an interesting watch, I won't spoil any of it but setting aside 10min to watch it, even if you don't play Gmod (I fall into this category).

I'm building up a collection of recolored enemies so I can mix and match them with various mods so I can have some new content that still fits within the HL universe. To me, this is particularly important for older mods like Azure Sheep, Deliverance, Todesangst etc I made a lot of use of STAHP.exe's 'Multicoloured vortigaunts' and Scorpieo's 'Nightstalker Vortigaunt' from Gamebanana but I need more. I hope to eventually have variants for each NPC/monster/item so people can pick and mix to s…

Here's a very different and strange Xash3D mod - Quake Remake. This is a full port of Quake 1 to goldsrc via Xash3D. What makes it especially interesting in my eyes is just how much goldsrc DNA you can feel in the game.

On the surface, it's basically the same game but if you have spent a decent chunk of time with Quake and HL1/other goldsrc games you'll probably be able to spot quite a few differences. Things like Scrags bleeding yellow and their projectile leaving the bullsquid impact, different screen effects for explosions, ability to spray logos and the list goes on.

The movement is goldsrc rather than Quake so they're similar but definitely different. You'll also see some behavioral changes both for monsters and weapons. I think the Nailgun fires at the same speed as the MP5 so that's a big change right there.

All of these changes feel incidental rather than deliberate. I think they're a byproduct of porting the whole game to goldsrc. There's also a number of mods and addons in moddb that I haven't explored just yet but definitely will.

If you're a big Quake fan who has also played a lot of Half-Life 1 then I would highly recommend checking out this bizarre little port. Let me know what cool and strange things you guys find! I'm gonna play through all 4 episodes myself so I'll be sure to share some stuff I find as well :)

It just occurred to me why he 9mmar only has 25 rounds in the mag when you pick it up, it's supposed to reflect the fact that the hgrunts had already fired the gun..

This may be common knowledge but it legit didn't click for me until just last night, only took 24 years x_x

Half-Life - Full Audio Remaster moddb.com/games/half-life/addons… I've been using this audio remaster, made by Senn, for the last few days and man, is it ever awesome... It uses the original audio but massively improves the quality, here is the description as per Senn: "Dedicated to faithfully remastering all the low quality sound effects and dialogue from Half-Life, Blue Shift and Opposing Force. Monsters. Machinery. Scientists. You…

EDIT: Thanks to mxpph at Sourceruns.org for linking me to this hlkz mapp pack with 701 maps! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QLe4syfvuq2pD2KGf4_xtNai38hcw35l/view

Original Post:

I'm trying to improve my bhopping and general goldsrc movement however I'm having difficulty finding jump maps/kz maps. I have managed to get a handful of maps (6 maps total) like ztricks but I know there are heaps more out there.

I'm looking for more noob friendly maps, stuff like giantbean and gigablock for cs. I'm not terrible at movement but I'm not good enough to be able to do runs of most of the maps I've found.

I've checked rstl, gamebanana and moddb by searching for "kz" and "jump" but came up short. I checked sourceruns and found quite a few maps referenced but no actual download links

Any help would be hugely appreciated!
