Gordon had no family or friends outside of Black Mesa. I heard about the theory somewhere on Discord, but the main argument was that Gordon didn't looked or tried to contact other people in the start of HL2.
Well. you have to bring into the theory the fact that:
-Freeman has a baby in his locker
-After stasis he would possibly lose a bit of memory
-At start he was walking aimlessly to identify his surroundings (as a smart person would to get a conclusion)
-He was in matter of minutes having to run for his life in apartments then was forcefully taken to kleiner
-The he spent 2 chapters running away from cops
-He reached Eli lab and before he could do anything he was in Ravenholm
-Then in Ravenholm he fought zombies to live
-In highway 17 and sandtraps he was driving becouse what else can you do
-Then he went to Nova Prospekt were life took him
You gotta remember he propably did it not only for Resistance but also for the fact that Kleiner, Eli and Barney were only 3 friends and co-workers Gordon has with him and to talk to after he finnaly settles so he was also driven by wanting to save somebody that was at this point closest to him and that he knew where he is
-He fought in an Uprising
-He was in the citadel saving the world
-He was escaping from a exploding city
-He (again) was on a way to settle for atleast a bit in White Forest
-He saw horrors combine has done to humanity and would think that his infant is dead
-We have a theory from Alyx that the Americas are wiped due to an X on them implying that Americas are GONE
-Gordon is in fucking Eastern Europe the possibility of his INFANT baby getting out of Americas (they would be of no use to combine), surviving multiple alien desieses and aliens themselve Xen invasion brought, Race X, Nuke in New Mexico, 7 hour war, Combine occupation and not being turned into a Transhuman are lesser then Slim so he would assume they are dead by now
-Gordon is Mute wich means he would have to write things like that down
-He would propably be severly depressed after events of HL, HL2 and episodes wich adds more fuel to Gordon not beliving in their family being alive point
-Phone lines are cut, you can see phones in HL2 have cut wires
The baby in Gordon's locker is just an easter egg a dev put in of their own child. When prompted, Marc Laidlaw offered the idea that it could be a relative like a niece, but it's pretty clear that the baby picture is not relevant to the story or Gordon's character. It's also never directly stated that Gordon is mute. Sure, this is one explanation for him being a silent protagonist, but this is ultimately simply to let the player be immersed in the world as Gordon.
The former is just a part of being a silent protagonist, and the latter is lampshading him being a silent protagonist. I think Gordon being mute is a valid interpretation of the character, but I don't think it's a canon fact about him.
My personal headcanon is that Gordon and Barney own copies of "The Truth About Aliens" because they work at the equivalent of Area 51 and read through it together to laugh at all the insane conspiracy stuff in it, like the notion of aliens being held at Black Mesa for study (which they're unaware is actually true.)
Americas being wiped. and that CS, L4D, Portal, HL, Day of Defeat and maybe even TF2 are all connected
Reasons for Americas being wiped is that:
A - Americans and others were transported to Europe
B - Americas are crossed out on map of europe
And now for reasons why L4D would be canon:
We know that there is no cities in Americas wich explains why we dont see combine presance

TF2 is pretty explicitly not canon to Half-Life. It has its own world of bizarre shit, like Abraham Lincoln inventing rocket jumping or something like that.
