I received some very sad News early this morning...The visionary art direct for Half Life 2, Viktor Antonov has passed away.
The incredible visionary, creative and amazing artits was the one responsible for making Half Life 2 what is it today, along with the Valve team. His vision of a dystopian world was one of my favorites, his artwork and visions where and still are massive insparitions to me and many others...The steampunk aesthetic mixed with the organic yet blocky nature of his architechture is by far one of the best work I have seen out there...
May you rest in peace, you will not be forgotten.

I am very dismayed to hear of the passing of the great Viktor Antonov, the amazingly talented art director for Half-Life 2, Dishonored and several other classic titles. His work was a great inspiration for many including myself, and I even used his work in a small part of a wider artist case study I did for the final assignment of my first year during my art and design course in 2021. As a small tribute, I present this portion of the work that was submitted during that time. 

You died far too young Viktor, you had so much more to give. May you rest in peace 🌹

Deeply sadened to learn about Viktor Antonov's death. 

The vision he brought to Half-Life 2 cemented my absolute passion for this saga. As a frenchman, I was deeply proud to learn how he took inspiration from the Austerlitz train station in Paris for City 17's own train station. 

Viktor Antonov proved with his creative genius that video game is indeed art. That it's a crossroad of many artistic skills to create even more art.

With his vision and artistic genius, he helped to shape one of the most mythical, beloved and respected video game ever. And of course let's not forget also about Dishonored.

His loss will be deeply felt both by the industry but also by the players.

Thanks for giving us City 17 Viktor. We will never forget you and your amazing work. May you rise and shine in a much better and less sad world and bless it with your creative genius like your did in ours.

I’m very saddened to hear about Viktor Antonov’s passing. 

This was a huge shock given his recent appearance in the Half-Life 2 20th anniversary documentary.

Viktor was a huge inspiration to me, especially during my years studying architecture. I actually wrote my 2nd year dissertation on his work, given I had interest in potentially going in to game design - with him being my idol to that.

It is fair to say he made Half-Life 2 very special.

We are extremely saddened to hear the passing of Viktor Antonov.

Viktor was a visionary designer and artist. His work inspired a generation of game designers, artists and gamers, including ourselves.

Half-Life 2 would not be what it is without him.
