A little known piece of trivia: Half-Life was influenced by Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. So much so, that the ladder climbing in the Half-Life Alpha is almost a carbon copy of the ladder climbing in Turok. Even down to the grunts as you climb. There's other Turok influences that can be seen in HL, this is just the one that I find the most amusing.

Did you know that Power Up survived that October 1997 restart of Half-Life story without much changes throughout development? Minor layout changes and aesthetic changes is the most that happened to it.

Security Complex and Alien Research Lab also survived the restart up until sometime in 1998 (likely around April of 1998.)

"Forget About Freeman" and Lambda Complex also survived, but with major changes after the restart in October of 97 and then had large amounts of the chapter changed and/or removed post-E3 1998.

Surface Tension also survived from the original design, but had its starting map changed by April of 1998 and had Geo inserted into it post-E3 1998. Along with some possible unknown changes to the end of the chapter.

Office Complex partially survived, but had major overhauls done to it after the restart.

It is possible that Apprehension also survived the restart, but this chapter wasn't known til the development restart, so it isn't possible to prove it. But it is known that by early 1998 that the chapter was very similar to the final chapter.

Did you know that Surface Tension originally started with Boot Camp?

There's concept art remaining for this iteration of the map. It had the same opening as seen in the "changelevel" area of Alien Research Lab (C2A4) to C2A5. Judging by the concept, it is likely that not much of the chapter was too different from the later version. You still went onto the Cliffside and ended up in the Military Camp section. It is unknown to how much the map differed in the early/mid 97 version of the chapter to the late 97 version of the chapter (how much differed beyond Cliffside) as late 97 marked the point where they started heavily revising HL. It is possible that Surface Tension went mostly unchanged (sans the new opening) until after E3 1998.

It would be replaced by the Dam sometime in April of 1998, ValveVisit.avi would of documented the Dam as it was being worked on.

Did you know that the Rat appears in Half-Life a grand total of 8 times across 3 maps?

They only appear in these Training Course maps:
t0a0 - 2 Rats
t0a0b - 3 Rats
t0a0b2 - Ditto

The Rat does not appear in Half-Life: Source, but is supposed to. The entity is still in those BSPs in Half-Life: Source but they had not ported over the NPC itself. They also didn't bother to port over the Tentacle Maw, despite being compiled in HL (but not used and lacks its model.) They did port over the cut Floater monster, despite not once appearing in the game.

How could they get away with this blasphemy!

There's been a few Zoo maps that existed during Half-Life's development:
zoo.bsp (a Zoo for all Human NPCs)
g_zoo.bsp (a Zoo for all the German versions of the Human NPCs)
alien_zoo.bsp (a Zoo for all of the Xen-based NPCs)
sprzoo.bsp (a Zoo for all of the sprites in the game)

With that knowledge, the attached image shows both a Chubtoad (Xen creature) and a Rat (non-Xen creature) next to each other. If its assumed no Xen creatures were in "zoo.bsp" then this deeply implies that the Rat is in "alien_zoo.bsp."

Did you know that the Desert sections of Surface Tension used to not be connected to the other maps of Surface Tension?

These Desert maps used to be known as "Geo," and were developed by Dario Casali. The chapter was developed around the time they decided to start redoing large parts of the game (around October of 1997) likely intended as a replacement for the alpha version of Surface Tension. Ultimately, it was just merged into Surface Tension instead of outright replacing it.

There were 4 maps to the "Geo" chapter. Only the Desert maps survive in the final game, the inner military camp was scrapped in favor of the original Surface Tension military camp (with severe modification.)

"Geo" can also be seen in the Half-Life: Preliminary Findings "INDEEP" footage.

It is unknown to how much of Surface Tension was changed compared to the alpha version, but what is known is that the first map used to be different and was retained until April of 1998.

The later alpha version of the chapter (around E3 1998 and before "Geo" was merged in) seems to be quite like the retail chapter sans the "Geo" integration. It is unknown to how much C2A5F was changed, and C2A5E is mostly unknown beyond a non-descriptive screenshot from late in development.

By April of 1998, the original boot camp-like map was replaced with the Dam map that we see in the final game (with slight differences) and sometime after E3 1998 the "Geo" map set would of been integrated into the chapter.
