Well I've mentioned it before, but I think I'll say it here too;
During the Northern Star chapter in HLA, there's a number of Barnacles. Now I'm a big fan of these adorable creatures; so try to avoid killing them. To my amazement when I got to the top of a staircase, I found one of the Barnacles I had saved was now within reaching distance (not its tongue, I mean the actual Barnacle). As this was in VR I could actually pet it! So I patted the Barnacle and told it how cute it was, before going on my way to shut down the sub-station powering the vault. :3
I want to try playthroughs of the Half-Life games where I try and keep as many Barnacles alive as possible. I think I might become a conservationist for these creatures.
You know that part in Half-life 2 with the horrible square where you need to protect Alyx while she opens up a generator for you to disable with the gravity gun? I managed to keep two rebels alive, one of them died dramatically as the four of us (me, Alyx and them) ran through the gate, but one survived, she watched as Alyx climbed the building, which was curious, didn't expect her to have a reaction.
So then I wanted to bring the NPC further along with me, but the thing is, the rebels are absolutely not supposed to be alive at this point so the pathing is really funky, there's that big drop where you go into, that dried up canal, right after Alyx gets captured, the rebel wouldn't jump in after me... BUT! I gathered a bunch of boxes, built a box tower next to the ledge and told her to stand on it, to my surprise she did, then I removed boxes from the tower to lower her to the ground level, and by doing this I managed to bring her to the bottom of the canal. Then I painfully pushed her along all the way until I got to that room where you climb on a horizontal pipe to get over a fence and some Manhacks burst in through the window, there was no way to get her through there or the sections that followed, so I left her there, but I made a ladder out of boxes for her for RP reasons.
It was probably the furthest along I ever brought random friendlies in a Half-life game. I took screenshots but I don't know where they went, if I can find them I'll reply to this with them.
i didn't come up with this, but i managed to do what ross scott did in HL1 and jump through that door before the grunts threw a granade into the garage.
completed my third playthrough of the first game like last night and i was very proud of myself when i managed to do this :)
Killing the first ichthyosaur in Apprehension and the one in Surface Tension without touching the water.
Also making all the grunts blow each other up in the room with the M1A1 Abrams in Surface Tension.
i wouldn't say "smartest" but i tried to bring sentries for the "alyx fixin' the portal to kliener's base" part of the game with the sentries level before. it does make the level abit easier
not exactly in hl2 itself but in hl2 dm. i will never forget that time there was two explosive barrels on a map, i shot one causing to explode, which lead another the barrel launching to some guy, exploding and killing him. still proud of that.
you know that bit in We've Got Hostiles with that room with the two bridges and barnacles? One of the barnacles is close to the top bridge, so if you get caught on that barnacle and kill it just before it chomps you, move towards the bridge

You can do this in Apprehension too, in the room where you first see the ichthyosaur.
