Does anyone else think the protagonist of Half-Life: Echoes was Azian Vance, Eli's wife? I personally think so, and I'll explain why:
The mod uses retail and cut dialogue of Eli talking about his family. Specifically these quotes:
[Talking about Alyx]
"I should have know when he rescued her it was for his own damn reasons."
[Talking about Azian]
"You remember my wife Azian, don't you?"
"We were living in base housing, you know."
"I can still only guess what might have happened to my wife."
At the end of the mod, we can get a look at the base housing in question. We see G-Man maliciously hovering over baby Alyx in her cradle, before confronting the protagonist themselves, whereupon he states:
"We meet again. So nice to have you with us. [bomb sirens in the background] Ah, not for long (ha)."

I will probably disappoint some people, but i think the pile of flesh inside of a closet of that room might be what's left of Azian...
Update: It seems my theory has some popularity - SteamGridDB user Ramzej has created some grids featuring Azian Vance as the featured protagonist: Vertical grid: steamgriddb.com/grid/245298 Game background: steamgriddb.com/hero/59396 They looks amazing!
I remember being super confused at first but after going through it again, I came to the conclusion we were playing as Azian.
