The recent 64 bit update to TF2 introduced a bug that if you use a custom HUD that uses elements from HL2's HUD, Source would get confused into thinking that you're playing Half-Life.
Shortly after the update Valve put a patch out that fixed many issues with the 64 bit update, and among the lines of the patch notes there was this:
"Fixed a crash under 64-bit caused by some custom HUDs using Half-Life 2 HUD elements which assume the player is Gordon Freeman."
