While Portal 1's design is timeless, it's unfortunately far from perfect, and after the last video I made on it, I learned that many people have struggled over the years with one of its last levels. In this video, I look into why this is, explore said level's history, and try redesigning it to address its issues. Welcome to a series I like to call "Betafied." I hope you all enjoy!
It was pretty good! I do feel the tone when breaking the glass is a bit overkill, mainly the sound used. If it was a more glitchy sound I could see it justified as the glass being electrified or something like that, but the Half-Life 1 elevator bell sound? It just doesn't make sense for breaking glass to be a good thing in-universe at least to me. I guess it could be justified with something like "GlaDOS likes puzzles, but she didn't have time to introduce this puzzle mechanic, so she had to make all the glass play a DING sound when broken so that it helps Chell understand the puzzle", but that doesn't exactly feel good in my mind. I do feel every other adjustment you made were okay. Of course, you have to get a good blend between "it makes sense in-universe" and "" And generally, the video itself was really good! I did notice some captioning errors (mainly timing), but since I'm not deaf, and just uses the captions as a helping-hand, it was okay.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed! My first attempt was with Glados responding every time the glass breaks, but it didn't work perfectly thanks to other voice lines playing. After that, I was going to use a klaxon alarm, but I was worried that players already associated the sound with turrets, since it happens at the start of the level and again in escape_02. You aren't the only one to mention the sounds, so I might wind up changing it.
By the way, uh, sorry for not even fully writing my comment! My excuse would be that I've been having some rough times recently (mainly related to not getting enough/any sleep, and stress related to moving and renovation), so yeeahhh.. I'm fine though, I'll get through it. Anyway, within the empty quotes would be something referring to the rocket turrets being introduced properly, or well, as properly as you can.
I kinda knew I was doing it all wrong but went with it anyways
