The Death Of The Web
The Death Of The Web
garry.net

@garry wrote an interesting article about the state of the web at the minute. This is something I (and the rest of our team) are quite passionate about — building alternate bs-free web experience for the Valve community [and maybe more]. LambdaGeneration.com is fully independent and will always be free from obtrusive ads, unnecessary popups, login-walls, selling private data or any other bs most mainstream sites succumb to. We would rather close down than lower ourselves to any of this stuff (not that I think that will happen). We also miss Planet Half-Life - a huge inspiration behind the current LambdaGeneration platform [and it's future] 🫡 🪐

For those also curious how we keep the lights on without ads: the site and our gameservers do cost a lot to run (and increasing significantly due to greedy providers), with myself and @valkyrie generously funding the site/game servers respectively. It's inevitable we will have to implement something to help fund the site, however we want to do this in a tasteful and meaningful way (such as donor accounts), without taking anything away from the current site. As an independent site, we will never resort to ads/popups/login walls/paid verification or selling private data like many other platforms do (*cough* R*ddit).

Would be pretty cool to see some site features for donaters in future, as just simple "Site Supporter "badges in the nicknames or even more. I see much potential in this platform and hope for big growth of this site.

Gamebanana without Adblock could fit in perfectly with the examples Garry gives here...

honestly we, as a community, don't appreciate and thank you guys enough to have created such a wonderful and simple site for valve fans Not only is this just about sharing and discussing stuff related to valve games but a lot of valve centric content creators, like artists and modders, get a lot of attention from the right audience Keep up the good word and long live lambdageneration!
