History of the portal designs 0_0 The design of the dual portals went through a fair amount of development, with 4 distinct "eras" of portal design known to the public. "2005" Portals These beta portals were distinct - they experimented with cyan and purple as their main colour scheme, rather than blue and orange. They're officially described as "Mid 2005 cyan and purple plasma portals" "Vine" Portals These beta portals, aptly dubbed "vine" portals, appear thinner and duller than the others within this list, emitting little to no light, and appearing more as rifts "ripped" in our dimension, rather than simple ovals. These are the first portals known to use the blue and orange colour scheme, a colour choice lifted from Narbacular Drop. "Swirly" Portals The closest portals to the retail design, these beta portals were very similar to what we eventually got, however, they have a much brighter, much more "loud" design compared to retail, incorporating swirls and spikes. Retail Portals You know these! These are what we got in the final game! They're a balance between distinctive and subtle, being eye-catching enough as to not easily lose them in a variety of environments, but non-conspicuous enough to not be an eye-sore (they were also nerfed from the Swirly design to run on the Xbox 360).

I really like the third design. I really wish there was an options on the menu after beating the game to have that design. Thank you for the in-depth story about Portal's Portal design.
That third design certainly is something, i'd pay just to have that as a mod.
Fascinating! I love them all, especially the third.
The 3rd design looks pretty cartoony
