Vanilla. I go in waves of adding tons of mods, and then realizing that vanilla is best. Mmod's explosions, effects, sounds, and AI are nice too, but not essential
Half-Life 2 Update is for me the way to go; still loyal to the vanilla experience. Heavily modded versions aren't bad though and I do like them, just not as much as the Update version.

HL2 Update + MMod

usually i play with mmod so i guess i prefer mmod
for me. HL2 playable only improved one. MMoD + Update + some stuff from gamebanana or Gmod workshop.
