i love mapping, get in the groove and it's therapeutic
Especially when JACK or Hammer, or Worldcraft crashes because you move that water or that wall :)
Use Hammer++ for source. And JACK for goldsrc. Default Hammer/WC is dumb... so much pain.
I know. I using Jack for hl1... As for source, did not fan of it.... but even Jack can crash.... and sometimes - often
Anything made for goldsrc is destined to crash. that's the beauty of it :)

Which version of Jack are you using? Steam version never crashed for me for more than a year even once. The free version is buggy and very very outdated.
As you can guess - free one :)
You better buy it, or find sone other way to get it, free version is very bad
