Becasause this is optional place. I bet many players didn't notice or even see it when they played BMS or HL1 respectively.
All tho it is also simple to find out which portals are correct without looking at this blood hint, both in HL on GldSrc and Black Mesa. Because portal exits are most visible from position of their entry.

I knew the sequence bc when I didn't have good pc and I had limited internet transfer I was practicing hl-speedruning
