You're almost right, it's for checking truck loads and warehouse. The newer ones come with Android, so they're like bulkier smartphones with bar code scanner!

I'm using them for inventory too, im working in a dhl warehouse. Same scanners everywhere with windows embedded, but different inbuilt software for the internal work. (Putty or SAP)
I love my job. Just doing inventory on picking locations, counting boxes.
For now in the new warehouse we counting even the reserves with Man-UP truck.
