I've had a huge question for a long time and I wanted to see if someone could answer me: Is it necessary to have the steam version of Half Life 1 to be able to make mods? It's because I have the No-steam version of the game and supposedly I require that version yes or yes, but I'm not sure.

I am not a modder but I am aware that the SteamPipe update many years ago totally changed the way mods worked (for Linux/Mac support). I remember the USS Darkstar being completely broken initially for example. I assume you can make mods for the retail version but they will be locked to that...

We don't have mentions working yet but I'd ping Magic Nipples as he is the GoldSrc chief around here.

depends on the complexity of the mod simple maps will probably be alright but anything with code will probably be broken

I mean, if I want to do something like Textures, maps, models, etc, using either of the two versions, either the Steam version or the No-steam version, it won't affect anything. But, if I want to make a mod from scratch (I mean, make a completely new mod, modifying the code and all that), if or if it would require the Steam version, so that it does not break, due to the update that valve put with Linux several years ago?

belated response but as long as they didn't change the function of any entitiies after the steam port then it should be fine. the biggest changes if i recall was the linux/mac port and the various security fixes over the last 20 years
