my man's playing with fullbright
there's this weird thing that happens with half-life 2 where it defaults to directx 8 even when the computer is very capable of directx 9 and newer
oh and directx 8 doesn't support hdr and since some of the half-life 2 maps have hdr lighting, it defaults with no lighting
i happend to be when i played hl2 for the first time. it was strange since ep 1 and 2 worked fine
Same thing, almost every other Source game used DirectX 9, the only other game I had this happen with was Portal: The First Slice and I called the DirectX 8 portals "demo portals" because I've only seen it in the demo
