Way before Day of Defeat excited a little-known Half-Life mod called War in Europe set the stage. Released in 1999, it was rough, experimental… and full of ideas that would later shape DoD. I just explored all of them in one video, like a virtual time capsule of the early modding era. Preservation matters.
A true classic!
There’s something timeless about this era. Raw design, community-driven evolution, and that distinct HL1 charm.
Better than MoH for PS1...for the fact that it ran in a pc game which is easily modded.
Totally agree. but with the full chaos and creativity of GoldSrc modding. Even at that early stage, it felt more alive and unpredictable than anything on console. Mod it, break it, remix it… that was the fun.
if only spielberg had the better hindsight and made the game on quake ii engine at least...bonus if he used goldsrc ofc.
Alternate 1999 unlocked: MoH on GoldSrc , crunchy gunfights, and pure chaos.
