I'm pretty sure software rendering is always jank, it has the same polygon wobble effect from ps1 games because software rendering is exactly how ps1 rendered 3D. This was before 3D acceleration so I imagine the option in Half-Life was meant for people playing with literally only a CPU. (At least before integrated graphics became a thing...)
