does anyone find it strange that Gordon can be both Employee of the Month AND a chronically late, recent hire at Black Mesa?

Maybe Kleiner is in charge of Employee of the Month and picked Gordon because they're friends and Gordon is good at getting into his office when he locks himself out.

That's all he does.

Gordon is not a recent hire, I genuinely don’t understand why people think this. He and Barney had been friends for a long time, racing each other though air ducts whenever Kleiner locked himself out of his office. Lots of scientists know Gordon, as they say “Hello, Gordon Freeman” when you pass them. On top of all this, I don’t think it is ever mentioned that Half-Life takes place on Gordon’s first day at Black Mesa (because it doesn’t), yet lots of people seem to believe it does

I never said it takes place on his first day, I believe he is a recent hire (less than a year of employment) because in the game manual included with my boxed Half-Life Platinum collection, there is a page with a picture of Gordon's letter of acceptance of employment at Black Mesa, which is dated May 5, 200-. the Black Mesa Incident occurs on May 16, 200-

Yes, could be Gearbox just did it for the fun of it and to help tie the games.
