When I was originally using Mapbase, I used a method similar to how the Original Portal 1 and EZ:2 handled Portal buttons with a trigger_multiple. Specifically, I had a trigger_mutiple filtered to only except cubes and players, and set to animate the button prop when something that could activate was in it.
I've since switched to Portal 2 Community Edition, however, and that has Half Life 2 entities running in Portal 2's engine. P2:CE is a closed beta though, so you'd have to go to their Discord to apply for a beta tester position.
