It's an intentional limit because of the current layout of posts, small images would be scaled/very blurry. Maybe will remove this if we have an alternate post design for small images in the future.
The problem is that it's also a limit for comment images, which display significantly smaller. Also, you could always disable or restrict anti-aliasing for smaller images.
