THE DISPUTE:

How can Gordon’s first day be May 16th on the same day as Black Mesa Incident, yet everyone says dialogue that proves they know him and his habits beforehand, while also having calendars in December?

MY EXPLANATION:

(Please take with a grain of salt)

According to the letter sent by Black Mesa’s Civilian Recruitment Division, Dr. Isaac Kleiner was Gordon Freeman’s Professor at MIT.

Typically when anyone with a recent obtainment of Masters or PhD Degree, needs field experience for employment especially for Physics study.

Gordon is in his mid to late 20s and is assumed to be a recent graduate with a PhD in Theoretical Physics, but had little to no professional experience other than the classroom.

Kleiner saw potential in Gordon as stated by Dr. Rosenberg in Decay, and had him do a probationary paid internship at Black Mesa. Here he worked under Kleiner on specific projects that didn’t require a government clearance and got to meet all the facility staff, as well as Barney Calhoun.

It was at this time where everyone got to know Gordon and his habit to be late, even establishing a friendship with Barney who he raced into vents to get into Kleiner’s office as stated by Alyx Vance years later.

Once Gordon’s internship contract obligations were fulfilled for the time that remained, he took another Internship at the University of Innsbruck and remained there for a period of time.

Meanwhile, Black Mesa’s Civilian Recruitment Division was in the process of hiring new candidates for employment at the facility. When they got to the position of needing a candidate in Theoretical Physics, Helena Mossman was being considered.

However once the board heard that Gordon already worked on various projects with Kleiner while interning at the facility and now was at the University of Innsbruck, they immediately chose him edging out Mossman as stated by Eli Vance.

The Civilian Recruitment Division along with Kleiner’s recommendation, sent Gordon’s offer letter to him at Innsbruck dated May 5th, 200- wanting him to work for Black Mesa as an official full time employee. Gordon immediately packed his bags and returned to United States to begin preparations for his first day as an actual employee on May 16th, 200-. This included a lot of paperwork, security clearances, drug tests, etc. The rest as you know, is history!
